Forced by the Cowboys

Annie lay on her back, hands resting behind her head. Far above her head, she could see the stars in the night sky, twinkling and sparkling in countless multitudes. She let out a little sigh of contentment. Out here in the desert, there was no light pollution to obscure the view, and it was utterly beautiful.

The only sounds were of the crackling fire and the occasional chirping cicada. Annie couldn't think of the last time that she'd been so at peace, and she closed her eyes and reminisced about the past few blissful days.

She'd arrived at the ranch in the back of a bumpy, trundling pickup that had collected her from the little local airport. It was driven by a quietly polite man who introduced himself as 'Chet', with a flourish of his Stetson.

Annie guessed that he was somewhere in his thirties, although it was hard to tell. The tanned skin of his face was tracked by the beginnings of careworn lines which gave him a rugged, weather-beaten look. He was tall and rangy, and Annie admired the way the wiry muscles of his arms bunched as he hefted her large suitcase into the back of the pickup.

But his most striking feature were the startling light blue eyes that met hers with a reserved curiosity. Annie couldn't help but shiver at their intensity, yet be drawn to their beauty.

As they drove, Chet answered all of Annie's excited questions with polite, quiet answers, but she caught his eyes on her in the rear-view mirror more than once.

At first, Annie didn't know what to make of him. Did people like this still really exist in this world of tablet computers and Twitter and 24-hour convenience stores? They most certainly did not exist in the city where she was from, where people seemed to barely acknowledge each other, let alone speak together.

From his hat, to his faded Levi's, down to his battered leather boots, he seemed every inch the cowboy that every woman had fantasised about at least once. Rugged, self-sufficient, manly. Maybe it's all an act, Annie had thought, but if it is, he's doing a damn good job of it.

When they'd reached the ranch, Annie leapt out of the pickup excitedly, taking in the scene in front of her - her home for the next couple of weeks. A few small whitewashed buildings lay dotted around the complex, containing the guest bedrooms and the working buildings for the ranch. Cacti sprouted from the dusty ground, and desert flowers dotted the scene, bright and colourful.

Annie could hear the sounds of whinnying horses and men shouting as Chet led her to the check-in desk. After she had completed the paperwork, he took her to her room. It was small, basic but functional, and Annie loved it immediately.

Before he left, Chet turned to her, removing his hat. His chestnut brown hair was slightly tousled, giving him a boyish look that Annie found irresistible. He'd fixed her with those extraordinary eyes, and she couldn't help but stare into them as if transfixed.
